Risk assessment and management is a fundamental feature of running effective visits outside the classroom. Our practical guidance provides key principles to follow in planning these activities.
Thorough risk assessment is clearly a priority for all visits outside of the classroom, but in some cases the locations of destinations has meant that an on-site risk assessment is impossible. Therefore risk assessment has often had to be carried out during the visit itself, although in these cases the same general principles should be followed.
Its purpose is to identify potential hazards to the health, safety and wellbeing of all members of a group in advance of any visit, and to identify ways to mitigate or manage perceived risks accordingly.

Guidance is based on insights and experiences we have gained from running the TPYF Commemorative Visits Programme, but many good practice principles are also taken from the Department for Education and Skills (England) publication Good Practice Guide for Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits (HASPEV). The DfES HASPEV guidelines are also approved by the relevant education authorities in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A full version of the HASPEV good practice guide is available from the Teachernet website
