Learning with veterans adds a dynamic new dimension to finding out about the Second World War, the impact that the war had on those who experienced it, and its continued impact today. By relating historical events to real people, an enhanced understanding of the conflict can be achieved.
In 2004-05 veterans who served overseas during the Second World War were granted the opportunity to return to scenes of action, through the Big Lottery Heroes Return grant scheme. Over a thousand veterans who completed personal journeys of reminiscence filled in a ‘reflective questionnaire’ for Their Past Your Future. Explore learning resources based on the questionnaires.
Their Past Your Future ran a Partnerships Scheme for veterans and young people. The scheme enabled students from 80 schools and over 200 veterans to get to know each other through intergenerational learning. Expertise gleaned from the project is available to download in the form of guidelines for intergenerational activities.
