Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, Warsaw

Pupils from Ullswater Community College, Cumbria who were visiting Warsaw to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, which began on 1 August, 1944. The trip also incorporated an exploration of the Jewish experience of the conflict from the perspective of Warsaw and its central place in the events of the Holocaust. This memorial is to those Jewish resistance fighters who fought in the separate Ghetto Uprising (19 April 1943). The front of the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes shows ghetto fighters breaking away from the burning ghetto. The back of the monument shows old people, women and children being marched to an extermination camp by Nazi guards.
