Thailand Burma Railway Centre24 students from Cheney School, Oxford, travelled to Thailand and Japan as winners in the Their Past Your Future Commemorative Visits Competition, commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. They visited key sites, memorials and museums within the Far East theatre of conflict to learn about Japanese involvement in the Second World War, from the treatment of Allied Prisoners of War to the civilian suffering caused by the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima. The group also explored the experiences of Mr William Rose, an Allied POW in Japan during the war, whose story features in the Their Past Your Future Online Exhibition. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre is an interactive museum, information and research facility illustrating the history of the Thailand-Burma Railway. It contains replicas (such as one of a rail boxcar used to transport prisoners) as well as actual relics found on the railway, including personal effects and a 9-metre model of the railway. |
